A doula acts as an ally and is often a laison between the laboring couple or mother and the medical staff. She may assist parents in asking the right questions so they can make informed choices as labor progresses. A doula's job is to give unconditional support to the laboring woman so she feels safe enough to let go into the rhythm and power of each contraction.

The word doula comes from the Greek language and means "woman caregiver of another woman". A doula is a loving and reassuring guide for the pregnant woman or couple, and understands the physiology of labor and birth. Doulas are trained to help women cope with pain or discomfort during labor and birth by supporting them with measures such as massage, breathing, position changes, and the use of water. Each of these comfort measures are focused on helping a woman access her own innate natural resources. A calm and reassuring presence in the birth place, Doulas support the laboring woman during contractions as well as helping her to relax and regroup in the spaces between them.
